Review student privacy and request a school DPA

Review student data use, the written agreement for FERPA school-official use, school AI permissions, and the steps to request a DPA or quote.

Use this guide for a school or district's privacy and procurement review. Read the current legal pages alongside your institution's agreement before approving classroom use.

Review how student data is used

The Privacy Policy describes account and profile information, audio recordings, recording metadata such as source-page URLs, and usage and diagnostic information. When enabled, AI features also process audio and text to produce transcripts and other permitted outputs.

Talk & Comment does not sell personal information or use student data for targeted advertising. It uses service providers to operate the service; the Privacy Policy describes those disclosures.

Public recording links can be opened by anyone who has the link. If the recording owner's team turns off External sharing, player access is limited to members of that team. Follow the school's approved sharing practices for student information rather than treating a link as private to one named recipient.

Confirm the written school agreement

Under a written agreement with a school or district, Talk & Comment can act as a service provider or school official under FERPA, consistent with that agreement. Do not treat installing the extension or creating a personal teacher account as a substitute for the institution's required agreement.

The Compliance & Data Privacy page states that, under such an agreement, student data is used for the educational purpose directed by the teacher or institution and education-record information is not re-disclosed without authorization.

Requests to access, correct, or delete student records should generally go through the educational institution. Data return, deletion, and certification requests are governed by the applicable agreement and law; ask for the terms your district needs during review.

Request the applicable DPA

Talk & Comment has executed the Student Data Privacy Consortium's National Data Privacy Agreement (NDPA) v2.2 through the TEC Cooperative. Coverage also includes other cooperative, partner, and district-specific agreements. A state appearing on the coverage page is not a substitute for checking which agreement applies to your district.

  1. Open Compliance & Data Privacy. Review the current Signed DPA Coverage section on the compliance page.
  2. Choose Request a DPA. Use the Request a DPA link on that page for your district's agreement review.
  3. Identify the required agreement. Include your district and state, and ask whether an existing coverage path applies or whether your district needs its own agreement. The compliance page supports SDPC, state-specific, and custom district DPAs.

Decide on student AI separately

AI features are paid. For student accounts, only a district, school, or team setting can enable AI, including transcription. Without that setting, no student AI processing occurs. There is no separate individual-consent route that enables it for a student.

The current Privacy Policy identifies Amazon Web Services, Inc. as the AI processor. It says AI inputs are used to produce the enabled outputs, kept only as long as needed to return the results, and not used to train or improve AI models. Agreement-specific start dates can apply; review your signed terms with the current policy.

Student AI changes require a written district request to [email protected]. Turning on student recording does not turn on student AI. Use the school admin console guide to review the separate controls, and AI processing details for more context.

Request a School & District quote

The School & District plan includes TAC Pro access for every teacher, centralized billing and invoicing, an admin dashboard with usage reports, and a signed DPA. Recording retention follows the DPA terms.

  1. Open Pricing. Review the School & District column in the current plan comparison.
  2. Use Get a quote. Provide the school or district details requested on the pricing page. Quotes are offered by email without a required call.
  3. Review the quote and agreement together. Confirm the seats, student permissions, AI decision, and retention terms your institution is approving before rollout.
