Allow Talk & Comment sign-in for your school's Google Workspace

What a Google Workspace admin does when Google blocks Talk & Comment sign-in, and what the sign-in shares.

Last updated October 2, 2026

Use this guide when a teacher or student clicks Continue with Google on Talk & Comment and Google says that access is blocked by their administrator. Talk & Comment cannot change that setting. A Google Workspace admin for your school can.

What the sign-in asks Google for

Talk & Comment uses Google only to sign people in. The sign-in requests the email and profile scopes, which share:

  • the person's name
  • their email address
  • their profile photo

It does not request access to Google Drive, Google Classroom, or Gmail.

Trust Talk & Comment in the Google Admin console

A super admin can mark Talk & Comment as a trusted app:

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console at admin.google.com.
  2. Go to Security, then Access and data control, then API controls.
  3. Under App access control, choose Manage Third-Party App Access.
  4. Find Talk & Comment in the list of apps that people have tried to use. If it is not listed, choose Configure new app and search for Talk & Comment.
  5. Choose the organizational units it applies to. Start with your teachers.
  6. Set access to Trusted and save.

Google's menus change from time to time, and a new setting can take a while to apply. Google's own guide has the current steps: Control which third-party & internal apps access Google Workspace data.

Sign-in and the Chrome extension are separate settings

Trusting the app lets people sign in. Allowing or force-installing the Talk & Comment Chrome extension on managed Chromebooks is a separate Chrome policy. See School IT setup for managed Chromebooks.

Students can usually listen to Talk & Comment links without installing the extension or signing in. Allow sign-in for student organizational units only if your school has approved that workflow.

Privacy and agreements

For data privacy agreements, student data handling, and the agreements already in force, see Privacy for districts and Compliance.
