Troubleshooting
Recover a recording or retry an upload
Recover audio kept by the extension, retry a failed upload, or download a recording that is still open in the browser recorder.
Last updated October 16, 2026
Use this guide when recording stopped before upload finished, or an upload is waiting or failed. A local saved copy is not the same as an uploaded recording with a shareable link.
The floating recorder offers Recover
If the prompt says Your last recording was not uploaded. It is still saved on this computer., Talk & Comment has found retained audio on this device.
- Click Recover. This attempts to upload the retained recording. Use the computer and Talk & Comment account where you made it.
- Wait for a successful save before sharing. A recovery attempt is not proof that upload finished. Check for the saved recording before sending its link.
Choose Discard only if you want to delete that retained recording. Closing the prompt with Decide later keeps it for another attempt.
Recovery is not available for every interrupted recording. For example, the extension can report Previous recording was too long to recover. Do not assume that every lost or incomplete recording has a retained copy.
The popup says a recording is waiting for connection
Open Talk & Comment from Chrome's toolbar. 1 recording waiting for connection, or the plural version, means audio is queued locally for an upload attempt when the connection returns. It does not mean the recording is already online.
- Restore your connection. Keep using the same device and account. The queued recording can retry when the connection is available.
- Check whether the upload succeeds. For a signed-in account, look for the completed note in your recordings Library. Do not treat the waiting count as a shareable recording.
The popup offers Retry upload
If the popup says the recordings are still saved on this device:
- Check your connection and Talk & Comment sign-in. Use the account that made the recordings.
- Click Retry upload. The button can change to Retrying… while the attempt runs. Keep the saved copies if the attempt still fails.
You recorded in the browser instead
For audio that is still in the browser recorder, click Download recording when it is offered. Save the file before closing the tab or changing browser storage.
If you recorded before signing in, finish sign-in and choose a role that can record in the same tab. The kept recording can upload after those steps. If the kept-upload banner says Your recording did not upload. It is still saved in this tab., use Try again, or Download recording when available.
A recording kept for sign-in is tied to that tab. Closing it before upload loses access to the recording. For the complete workflow, see record without the extension.
If you cannot recover it
Ask for help without deleting the remaining local data. Include whether you used the extension or browser recorder, the exact message, and whether you changed device, account, or tab. Leave student or personal information out of screenshots.
For a note that already uploaded but will not play, use playback troubleshooting instead.
