Talk & Comment not working in Chrome: fix checklist

Find the next check for a missing mic, blocked recording, unsaved upload, plain-text link, or voice note that will not play.

Last updated October 16, 2026

Start with the checks below, then follow the guide for your symptom.

Check the extension first

  1. Check that Talk & Comment is on. Open chrome://extensions and find Talk & Comment. If it is missing, follow first-note setup.
  2. Refresh the page you were using. A page opened before an extension install or update may need a refresh.

The floating mic button is missing, or recording will not start Fix microphone access and the missing mic button.
A recording was interrupted, is waiting for connection, or failed to upload Recover the recording or retry its upload.
A pasted link stays plain text instead of becoming a player Check the paste location and inline player. An active editor does not turn the link into a player.
A player appears, but the note will not play Check playback. Try the recording's direct link outside the preview.
The note says Sign in to open this voice note Check who can listen. A restricted note needs an account in the sender's Talk & Comment organization.
Sign-in does not persist, or only an embedded sign-in fails Check browser storage and cookies. Do not treat third-party cookies as a requirement for all listening.
The page slows down or the floating recorder covers your work Hide or temporarily disable Talk & Comment. Recover unsaved audio before removing anything.

If you need to record without the extension, use the browser recorder guide. Browser recording still needs microphone access and permission to record under your account or school policy.

When to involve school IT or support

On a managed Chromebook or other school-managed browser, extension and microphone settings may be controlled by your school. Send IT the school setup guide.

When asking for help, include the page where it happens, the exact message, which step failed, and whether the device is school-managed. Leave student names and personal information out of screenshots.
